Meet the Doulas: Speed Dating Style. Coming October

MEET THE DOULAS: Thursday, October 14, 7-9 PM; Panera’s Bread Garden, back couch area, Sycamore Mall, 1646 Sycamore St, Iowa City, IA

Iowa City Doulas serve pregnant women in the Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty and surrounding area. We are a group of doulas committed to providing women in our community with prenatal, postpartum, labor and birth support.

So, what is a doula anyway? Doulas are women trained to provide non-medical support to a pregnant woman and her partner prenatally, during labor and birth, and in the immediate postpartum period. Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC)? Epidural? Unmedicated? Planned c-section? No matter what kind of birth you are hoping to have, a doula works with a couple to define for themselves what constitutes a good birth and helps them prepare for this life-changing event, providing information on normal birth processes, hospital procedures, comfort measures, and relaxation techniques to help a couple make their child's birth the best it can be. Postpartum doulas also work in the home, providing mothers with extra support for breastfeeding and newborn care.

Mindful Birthing: October 17 for winter babies

Mindful Birthing

The next course will start Sunday, October 17 from 2-5PM. It will run 7 consecutive Sundays through December 12 (we will not meet the Thanksgiving weekend). Cost is $250 and registration is required.

Back to School Thoughts: Green Light, Red Light

The kids are back to school and this year Khai and I are joining the march up the hill to our elementary school. We picked up a Keropi backpack and lunch bag on our trip to Seattle. I'm not sure who likes the frog more, myself, as a reminder of my childhood favourite, or Khai, a frog fan.

One of the behavior tools that the school uses is green light for good behavior, a yellow light for offenses, and a red light for serious misbehavior. Khai came home with the goal, "I want to have a green light every day." We were impressed that he understood the concept and wished to strive for that positive goal.

The below article made it to my mailbox, and I thought the concept was very timely at the start of the school year. If my child should watch his behavior, attitude, way of talking and interacting so should I, and I too must strive for green lights.

THE DAILY GROOVE ~ by Scott Noelle

The PATH Program: Master the art of parenting

with Partnership, Authenticity, Trust, and Heart...

http://www.enjoyparenting.com/path/info

Virtually all of us "lose it" with our kids at some

point. Then later we say, "I didn't want to yell at my

child, but I couldn't stop myself."

If you want to avoid these parent-child "collisions,"

you have to pay more attention to your "inner

stoplight": stress.

Suppose you're worried about getting your child to an

appointment on time. Worrying is stressful, so it's a

red light telling you to stop and get centered before

moving on. But long ago you were trained to tolerate

stress, so you don't notice the red light. You're on a

collision course!

Which parent is more likely to end up yelling, the one

who's centered or the one who's stressed?

Today, pay close attention to your subtle feelings.

Decide that even "mild" tension or irritation is a red

light. Stop, breathe, reach for better-feeling

thoughts, and wait for the green-light feeling of

*relief* before you take action.

International Cesarean Awareness Network: ICAN of Iowa City Chapter Meeting

ICAN of Iowa City website announces:

"Our next meeting is Wednesday, September 15 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Sycamore Mall Panera in Iowa City. All women and their children are welcome.

ICAN of Iowa City is a chapter of the International Cesarean Awareness Network, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve maternal-child health by preventing unnecessary cesareans through education, providing support for cesarean recovery, and promoting Vaginal Birth after Cesarean (VBAC). We hold monthly meetings offering woman-to-woman support for the complicated emotions that often accompany surgical birth, as well as providing information and resources to help the women in our community make informed birthing choices. We seek to be a place of safety in which women can ask questions of their peers, express concerns and fears, and share their experiences without judgment. We serve the cities of Iowa CIty, Coralville, Cedar Rapids, and surrounding communities.

•Have you had a c-section and need support from other moms who have been there?

•Do you want to learn how to prevent an unnecessary c-section?

•Do you want to learn more about Vaginal Birth After Cesarean?

•Are you looking for information about how to turn breech babies and vaginal breech birth options in Iowa?

•Do you want to promote normal, evidence-based birth practices?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you belong with ICAN!

The cesarean rate in the United States is an astounding 32.3%. Help us to reduce that number, one birth at a time."
