Bamboo Birth: January 2011 News

Bamboo Birth: January News, 2011

Dear Bamboo Birth Colleagues, Friends and Supporters,

Happy New Year! This is the year of the lucky rabbit. "Shogatsu, Japanese New Years Day is a time for new beginnings and renewed hope; a time for tradition, festivities and feasting." Reflecting on an amazing year of growth for my family, self and business, I am looking forwards to what the new year holds. May 2011 unfold with mystery, grace and giggles for you and your loved ones!

There are a number of projects, events, and announcements in this first newsletter of the year. Enjoy!

I have to share my appreciation for the UIHC nursing staff. In interviews I am often asked about the working relationship between doulas and nurses. I have to say that during my certification training I was inundated with so many negative stories and prepared for how to work within a hostile system. I have experienced nothing of the sort at the UIHC. The nurses greet me, and it so wonderful to hear, “it is so nice to see you.” I am so grateful for the collaborative approach that we enjoy. There was an experience that really brought this to life that I would like to share. After a birth I was tending to the family when the phone rang and the nurse said that the call was for me. Me? I tentatively answered the phone and was greeted by Nurse Sue. Sue had left for her shift change and took the time to call and thank me. What a wonderful gesture. Studies have indicated that if the birthing woman perceives the nurse and doula to be on good working terms, she reports a more positive birth experience and birth satisfaction. Isn’t that key? So thank you to the UIHC nursing staff for welcoming and collaborating with me as we work as a team to support the Bamboo Birth families.

Guest Article: Iowa Diaper Depot

Our number one goal is to make using cloth diapers as easy as possible so

more people will do what's best for their little youngster and the earth.

It's not hard, icky or smelly!

If you can take out the trash, you can use a diaper service! It is that

easy! They're very similar with the only difference being instead of a

stinky trash can, we leave behind clean fresh smelling diapers in a diaper

pail liner.

On your pickup day, you leave your dirty diapers in a bag outside your

door. You'll mark on a tag how many clean diapers you have left. We then

will pick them up and leave you a bag of fresh clean diapers — you don't

even have to be home. There is no rinsing, dunking, or soaking involved we

handle the mess you just worry about handling the baby!

If you choose to give us a try we will do our very best to make it a

wonderful experience for both you and your little one. Feel free to give

us a call or drop us an email even if you are not sure about cloth, it

would be our pleasure to answer any questions or setup a free in home

consultation so you can see cloth in action!

Open house on January 29th at 9:30-10:30 at the

North Liberty Recreation Center

Mission:

• My mission to my clients is to help them experience birth as an empowering life event in the hospital setting. I work to educate women about their birth options and choices so that they are able to make informed choices during the pregnancy, birth, and as parents. My mission to the community is to connect birth workers and to make the term “doula” a household name. What is a doula?

Gift certificates are available for babywearing consultations, postpartum doula support, birth support, and birth plan consultations. You can also request business cards to include in shower invitations. Birth and postpartum services are for Iowa City families; birth plan consultations can be nationwide with communication performed via phone and e-mail.

Referral challenge: do you know somebody who is pregnant and wants to experience a positive, safe, natural birth in the hospital environment? A good referral for me is a woman planning to give birth with little or no interventions in an Iowa City hospital, a woman who wants to learn labor coping skills such as guided imagery, hypnobirthing or active birthing, or a woman who is attempting a vaginal birth after a cesarean section (VBAC). You'll know it is a good time to refer to me when you hear one of these things: I want somebody with me during the entire birth. I want to be prepared to avoid interventions at the hospital so that I can make informed decisions. I want somebody there with us to support my partner, or I had a horrible birth last time and want somebody there to support me this time. When you hear any of these statements send them to my website at www.bamboobirth.comGreetings from my family to yours.
